I was wondering anyone could help me. I am due to start treatment on a 60 year old lady who has just had a knee replacement. I was wondering if there are any contraindications for the InterX due to the replacement and any tips on where to begin?
I did treatments on someone who had a knee replacement just before xmas. I actually did a very effective pre op treatment the night before. Is the leg still bandaged? i did a series of weekly treatments which eventually included mobility with array pads. To help recover i did multi-stims all the way down either side of the scar. I eventually did the same along the scar and painted using 90-360.
I also dosed acupoints under the knee and behind the knee and also on the other knee.
Typicaly Electrical Stimulation Devices are contra-indicated for use on the post operative metal implants, However, the InterX uses a cutaneous stimulation, meaning that it is limited to stimulating the skin, it does not penetrate the skin and does not cause muscular contraction and therefore is safe to use on the replaced joints. It stimulates fine nerve ending within the skin, and pain relief effect is due to descending inhibition and opiates release.
There few studies on the effectiveness of the InterX on post operative application that have been completed or in progress. One study was published in JBJS (see the link http://www.jbjs.org.uk/cgi/content/abstract/89-B/11/1488) which demonstartes that if the Interx is used additionally to the standard care, there is an early discharge by an average of 33%, lower med usage 25% - 46% less, pain reduced over 50% by day 2, improved daily range of motion and swelling is reduced over 50% (in ankle study).
You can use the device up to 4 times a day or at least once a day. When the bandage is covering the wound, you can treat the contra-lateral knee, Best to use the flexible array as it will make the treatment process easier, Cycle 1 of course as it is an acute trauma.
Thanks for that Les, the knee is no longer bandaged so I'll be following your tips. Roughly how many treatments before flex array work? and did you use them on lumbar spinal root and lateral and medial sides of knee? Becky
it should work from your first treatment session, cover both, anterior and posterior and medial and lateral. Area at the back - Lumbar - Sacral. Best to use the dual flex array, it has two pads, so you can treat simulataneously. Let us know the outcome :)
Just to keep you updated, I have carried out just 4 treatments on this lady and her progress is amazing!! She now has good mobility and a lot less pain. She still has slightly disturbed sleep and slight swelling on the posterior/medial side of her knee but this is improving.
I will be visiting Yorks for a week in August and intend to treat my friend who has had repeated surgery on her knee over the last 2 years! She is on much medication and very low after this lastes correctional operation. Any instructions will be most helpful Zulia
